Your First Dental Visit: Knowing What to Expect

If you haven’t been to the dentist in years, you’re not alone. It can be tempting to neglect our teeth, especially since we all lead such busy lives. But you shouldn’t put it off any longer as caring for your oral health is vital for your overall health and general wellbeing. In this article, we explain what you can expect during your first dental visit at The Dental Family Beaumaris

What to expect at your first dental visit

It may feel daunting making an appointment for your first dental visit in years (or ever),  but don’t worry. Let us know over the phone and we’ll ensure you feel relaxed and comfortable when you come in. Our dentists care about your oral health and want to help you achieve and maintain a healthy smile that you can be proud of.

A dental check-up is a routine appointment. When you haven’t been for a while there may be a few extra steps. You can expect it to take between 30 minutes to an hour. Here is what generally happens during your first dental visit:

Your medical history

We might ask you to fill out a new patient form and answer some questions about your medical history. This includes any known allergies, health concerns and medication you’re currently taking. It’s important that we’re aware of any medical conditions that may impact your teeth. Similarly, we need to ensure our treatment won’t impact any medication you’re on. We also need to avoid using any products you may be allergic to. This information is always confidential and helps us to give you the best possible treatment.

Your dentist will prioritise your comfort

Our team of friendly staff and dentists want to ensure you have the best possible dental experience at your first dental visit and every dental visit! We listen to your concerns and answer any questions that you have. We explain every step of the check-up and can offer tips and advice if you’re suffering from dental anxiety. We won’t rush through the appointment; we take the time to get to know you.

Dental examination

Next, we perform a thorough dental examination. This allows us to spot any potential problems and offer treatment solutions. Some early signs of oral health issues are difficult to see with the naked eye. We have special dental tools that allow us to accurately examine all your teeth and below the surface of your gum line.

X-rays are usually recommended at your first appointment. This gives us a look at what’s going on below the surface and in-between your teeth. Your dentist will explain any findings in detail.

Custom-made treatment plan

Once we’ve examined your teeth and checked for any signs of oral health issues, we create a custom treatment plan. This is 100% tailored to your individual needs. We aim to provide you with the best plan to get your teeth and gums in optimal health, and the support to allow you to decide on how to proceed with confidence.

Professional clean and scale

The next step is a thorough tooth cleaning. We use advanced dental tools to clean all your teeth from top to bottom. The length of the clean varies depending on individual factors. We remove any plaque or other build-up on your teeth and then polish them. After the clean we apply a fluoride treatment, this helps to strengthen your teeth and prevent decay.

Schedule your next appointment

Once we’re all done and have answered any questions you have, you can head out to our friendly reception staff. We recommend you make an appointment for your next visit. It can help you to keep your dental check-ups on track. Booking in advance also means you have a greater chance of securing an appointment at the time most suitable to you.

The frequency of your subsequent dental visit is advised by your dentist. It is usually anywhere between three and nine months depending on your treatment plan. If you don’t want to schedule your next appointment just yet we can send you a friendly reminder when it nears time.
